There’s more to Milwaukee than beer, brats and “Laverne and Shirley”.

It may not be Paris or London, but Milwaukee is a fun place to spend a long weekend with your sisters or girlfriends, especially in the summer.

There are festivals almost every week, celebrating all of the cultures that make up this city (and the U.S.). The largest music festival in the world is held here every year, and every 5 years Harley Davidson celebrates an anniversary (and this is one of those years!).

Plus the the Bead and Button Show, art and craft fairs, museums - all the things women love to do!

Summerfest

With more than 10 stages presenting music acts 12 hours a day, Summerfest is the largest music festival in the world. There’s plenty of food, beer, comedy and kid’s activities, too.

This year’s festival runs from June 26 through July 6th, with mainstage acts as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Rascal Flats, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw and the Jonas Brothers. There are literally hundreds of acts appearing during the fest - if you don’t like one, wander off to another stage! Admission is $15, but there are discounts available almost every day.

So when are you coming to Venice?

Popular lore has it that Venice is a dazzling city filled with lovers strolling along its canals and gondola drivers singing out ‘O Sole Mio’ as they gently glide their gondolas under the bridge of sighs. This is not far off the mark. Venice is a dazzling city - meant to be strolled through (cars are not allowed in anyway!) and the gondolas are its most enduring symbol.

See Venice while you still can. Because the city is sinking! Every year the city settles a little and if global warming contributes to rising sea levels in the Mediterranean, you can guess what the end result would be! The city elders are alive to it and have already instituted a number of steps to stop the sinking. But it will be some time before we know the results.

While the canals and waterways of Venice form a major tourist attraction and are today responsible for the millions of dollars of earning, they are also slowly eating away at the very foundations of the city. Chemical waste being disposed in the water is only hastening the process. Much is being done to save the city of Venice as it has been realized that the loss of Venice would make the world poorer.

Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park

Civil War and history buffs step right up. This 5,500-acre military park is a must-see attraction. Aside from famous battlefields, several historic buildings are located here. One of those buildings is the Chandler Plantation office building, known as the Stonewall Jackson Shrine. This is where General Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson took in his last breath.

Monticello

Let’s continue on the history trail with a visit to the estate of Thomas Jefferson-Monticello. Our third president lived here and during the Civil War, the Confederate government seized the estate and sold it. This special home is the only private home in the United States that’s named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Busch Gardens Europe

I promised fun and here you go. The Busch Gardens Europe is open from mid-March until the end of October. Their recent rollercoaster, The Griffon, climbs to 205 feet and then hurls you down along a 90-degree angle at 70 mph. It’s a blast.

This isn’t just some run-of-the-mill theme park. The National Amusement Park Historical Association named Busch Gardens Europe “World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park.” It’s complete with over 50 awesome rides and attractions, 10 stage shows, world-class cuisine, and much more. Read more »

Did you know that Virginia has some excellent wineries? Whether you’re an avid wine enthusiast or just looking for a fun activity for the day, Virginia has many great wineries to explore. From Blue Ridge Vineyard to Conoran Vineyard, there’s an enjoyable time to be had.

While there are many wineries to explore in Virginia, I will give a few good ones to start your journey. At the end of this article, I’ve put a link to a Web page that has more details about Virginia wine tourism. The two vineyards mentioned in this article are great, but there are plenty more vineyards in Virginia to explore.

In the previous part of this guide I introduced the idea that hiring a car on holiday is a great way to see more on holiday, however you need to be careful and this is where our guide continues with what to consider when driving in a foreign land.

When on the road make sure you wear seatbelts at all times, as well as the kids in the back who are all hyped up because you’re finally going to the water park! You’re in a foreign country and as such will likely be a complete novice with regards to the local driving rules. In most cases you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the road and so everything you know about driving is mirrored, this is the most common cause of accidents with car hiring holidaymakers. When we go on holiday we take time to relax from the hassles of working life, forgetting the various paperwork and reports of working life in favour of sitting by the side of the pool sipping an umbrella drink.
